Creada para la nación en 1937 mediante una ley del Congreso y dotada por Andrew W. Mellon, la National Gallery of Art comprende tres espacios conectados entre sí. El West Building (1941), una joya neoclásica coronada por una cúpula obra de John Russell Pope, reúne arte europeo y estadounidense desde la Edad Media hasta finales del siglo XIX; entre sus fondos destaca Ginebra de Benci de Leonardo da Vinci —el único cuadro del maestro conservado en el continente americano— junto a obras de Raphael, Vermeer, Rembrandt, Monet y van Gogh. El East Building (1978), diseñado por I. M. Pei con sus audaces líneas angulares, está dedicado al arte moderno y contemporáneo: cuenta con un móvil monumental de Calder en su atrio y salas en las torres consagradas a Calder y Rothko. Cruzando 7th Street, el Sculpture Garden, de casi 2,5 hectáreas, rodea una fuente central con esculturas de Louise Bourgeois, Roy Lichtenstein y otros destacados artistas. La entrada es gratuita desde el día de su inauguración.
