Inaugurado em 1993, a poucos passos do National Mall, o United States Holocaust Memorial Museum é o memorial oficial e museu vivo da nação dedicado aos seis milhões de judeus e a milhões de outras vítimas da perseguição nazi. Distribuída por três pisos, a sua Permanent Exhibition percorre cronologicamente o Holocausto — desde a ascensão nazi ao poder em 1933 até à libertação e às suas repercussões —, reunindo mais de 900 artefactos originais, imagens de arquivo e testemunhos gravados de sobreviventes. O edifício concebido por James Ingo Freed foi desenhado para desinquietar intencionalmente, com pormenores em tijolo, aço e vidro que evocam a arquitetura dos campos de concentração, culminando na hexagonal Hall of Remembrance e na sua chama eterna.
