Inaugurado em 1964 como Museum of History and Technology, em um dos últimos edifícios projetados pelo escritório McKim, Mead & White, este museu da Smithsonian reúne mais de 1,7 milhão de peças que narram a experiência americana. Sua grande atração é a Star-Spangled Banner original — a bandeira militar de 9 por 10 metros que inspirou Francis Scott Key —, exposta em uma sala climatizada com iluminação suave, junto ao átrio de cinco andares com claraboia. O percurso revela ainda os vestidos de posse das primeiras-damas, o balcão de Greensboro, a locomotiva John Bull de 1831 e relíquias da cultura pop em Entertainment Nation. A entrada é gratuita e não exige reserva de ingressos.
