O mumok é o maior museu de arte moderna e contemporânea da Áustria, reunindo cerca de 12.500 obras de aproximadamente 1.600 artistas. O seu acervo expandiu-se a partir das aquisições fundacionais de 1959, enriquecido pela Coleção Ludwig, pela Coleção Hahn e por um abrangente conjunto de obras do Acionismo Vienense, destacando-se também em movimentos como a Pop Art, o Fluxus e o Nouveau Réalisme. Desde 2001, ocupa um emblemático cubo revestido a rocha basáltica, concebido pelo atelier Ortner & Ortner no MuseumsQuartier, dispondo de cerca de 4.800 m² de espaço expositivo distribuídos por vários pisos.
