Fundado em 1870 e instalado desde 1909 em seu edifício na Huntington Avenue, projetado por Guy Lowell, o MFA abriga mais de 450.000 peças que abrangem desde a Antiguidade até os dias de hoje. A Art of the Americas Wing, inaugurada em 2010, distribui por quatro andares pinturas, esculturas e artes decorativas que vão do ouro pré-colombiano a nomes como Copley, Sargent e O'Keeffe. O acervo asiático, com mais de 115.000 itens, reúne a mais refinada e expressiva coleção de arte japonesa fora do Japão, enquanto as galerias egípcias e núbias têm como base as próprias escavações do museu em Giza. Às quintas e sextas-feiras, o museu fica aberto até as 22h, e na terceira quinta-feira de cada mês a entrada funciona no sistema "pague quanto quiser" a partir das 17h.

The Huntington Avenue main entrance has ramps on either side of the stairs and power-assist doors; the Linde Family Wing entrance on Museum Road offers a level entrance for visitors who need one. Wheelchairs and gallery stools available to borrow free. Service dogs welcome. The State Street Corporation Fenway Entrance is currently closed.
