O maior museu da New England dedicado à história afro-americana ocupa dois edifícios históricos na encosta norte de Beacon Hill. A African Meeting House (1806) é a mais antiga igreja negra preservada nos Estados Unidos — o salão onde William Lloyd Garrison fundou a New England Anti-Slavery Society em 1832 —, erguida por artesãos afro-americanos livres e restaurada ao seu aspecto de 1855. Ao lado, a Abiel Smith School (1835), a mais antiga escola pública do país construída exclusivamente para educar crianças afro-americanas, abriga hoje as galerias de exposição, os programas educativos e a loja do museu. O complexo é a última parada da Black Heritage Trail do museu, um percurso por 14 locais emblemáticos da comunidade negra livre de Boston antes da Guerra Civil; um segundo polo do MAAH fica em Nantucket.
