Fundado em 1986 pelo pintor e colecionador Hans Pels-Leusden, o museu é dedicado à obra de Käthe Kollwitz: autorretratos, séries de gravuras, desenhos, cartazes e bronzes. Em 2022, transferiu-se da sua residência histórica na Fasanenstraße para o Theaterbau do Schloss Charlottenburg, onde cerca de 100 obras estão expostas no primeiro piso. Exposições temporárias colocam a produção de Kollwitz em diálogo tanto com os seus contemporâneos como com artistas da atualidade.
