A Gemäldegalerie dos Staatliche Museen zu Berlin abriga um dos mais importantes acervos mundiais de pintura europeia do século XIII ao XVIII, reunindo obras-primas de van Eyck, Dürer, Holbein, Rafael, Ticiano, Caravaggio, Rembrandt e Vermeer. Cerca de mil obras estão expostas em 72 salas com iluminação zenital no edifício de 1998, projetado por Hilmer & Sattler no Kulturforum, dispostas por escolas e épocas ao redor de um grande átrio central. A sua coleção de pintura alemã e dos primitivos flamengos figura entre as mais prestigiadas do mundo.
