Conçu par Frank Lloyd Wright et inauguré en 1959, le Guggenheim est l'un des bâtiments les plus emblématiques du XXe siècle, avec sa rampe en spirale continue s'enroulant autour d'un atrium éclairé par une verrière zénithale. Fondé en 1939 sous le nom de Museum of Non-Objective Painting, il conserve environ 8 000 œuvres d'art impressionniste, postimpressionniste, moderne et contemporain, avec un fonds particulièrement riche en Vasily Kandinsky et la célèbre Thannhauser Collection. Le bâtiment fait partie des œuvres de Wright inscrites au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO.
