La Gemäldegalerie des Staatliche Museen zu Berlin abrite l'une des plus prestigieuses collections au monde de peinture européenne du XIIIe au XVIIIe siècle, jalonnée de chefs-d'œuvre signés van Eyck, Dürer, Holbein, Raphaël, Titien, Caravaggio, Rembrandt et Vermeer. Près d'un millier de toiles sont exposées dans 72 salles éclairées par verrières zénithales au sein de l'édifice conçu en 1998 par Hilmer & Sattler au Kulturforum, réparties par écoles et par époques autour d'un vaste hall central. Ses fonds de peintures allemande et des primitifs flamands comptent parmi les plus remarquables au monde.
