Inauguré en 1995 dans un bâtiment conçu par l’architecte américain Richard Meier, le MACBA est le principal musée d’art contemporain de Barcelone. Sa collection, centrée sur la seconde moitié du XXe siècle et la création contemporaine, comprend notamment le Fons Rafael Tous d’art conceptuel. Sa programmation alterne présentations temporaires de la collection, expositions monographiques, cinéma et création sonore, avec le soutien d’un centre de recherche, d’une bibliothèque et d’un fonds d’archives installés dans le Convent dels Àngels voisin. Les travaux d’agrandissement de la Plaça dels Àngels se poursuivront jusqu’en février 2027, mais le musée reste ouvert par son entrée habituelle.
