Fundado en 1863 y ubicado desde 1871 en el palacio neorrenacentista de Heinrich von Ferstel en el Stubenring, el MAK es uno de los museos de artes aplicadas, diseño y arquitectura más destacados de Europa. Su fondo abarca muebles y joyas de la Wiener Werkstätte, sillas de madera curvada de Thonet, los bocetos de Klimt para el Friso Stoclet, el gabinete de porcelana Du Paquier, arte de Asia Oriental y una de las colecciones de alfombras más selectas del mundo. Junto a sus salas permanentes, el museo organiza exposiciones temporales de arte contemporáneo, diseño y cartelería.
