Entre 1989 y 1991, Friedensreich Hundertwasser remodeló la antigua fábrica de muebles de madera curvada Thonet, en el barrio vienés de Weißgerber, dotándola de suelos ondulados, una fachada ajedrezada y vegetación que brota de la propia arquitectura. Sus dos plantas inferiores acogen la única exposición permanente del mundo dedicada a la obra de Hundertwasser. Las plantas superiores presentan muestras temporales de arte contemporáneo internacional centradas en la ecología y la relación entre el ser humano y la naturaleza; además, la institución se define como el primer «museo verde» de Austria.
