Inaugurado en el año 2000 como el primer museo de Austria dedicado a la música y al sonido, Haus der Musik tiene su sede en el Palais Erzherzog Carl, residencia de Otto Nicolai cuando fundó la Filarmónica de Viena en 1842. Sus cuatro plantas invitan a recorrer desde el archivo histórico y el museo de la propia orquesta hasta el laboratorio interactivo de sonido Sonotopia, pasando por salas consagradas a Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Strauss y Mahler. En la planta superior, los visitantes pueden empuñar la batuta y ponerse al frente de una Filarmónica de Viena virtual en la instalación Virtual Conductor.
