Mera, Don e Jason Rubell colecionam arte contemporânea desde 1964 e, em 2022, trouxeram parte desse acervo para Washington, inaugurando quase 3.000 metros quadrados de galerias no bairro de Southwest. O espaço ocupa a antiga Randall Junior High School, uma escola pública historicamente frequentada pela comunidade negra, erguida em 1906 e desativada em 1978. A família Rubell adquiriu o imóvel da Corcoran Gallery of Art em 2010 e convidou o escritório Beyer Blinder Belle para renovar as salas de aula, deixando à mostra tijolos aparentes, vigas de aço e amplas janelas. Marvin Gaye estudou no local, e a mostra inaugural, What's Going On, homenageou o cantor em seu título. O acervo em exibição é quase totalmente reformulado a cada ano, garantindo que o visitante dificilmente encontre as mesmas obras — e a entrada é gratuita para quem apresentar documento de morador de DC.
