Duncan Phillips inaugurou este museu na sua própria residência em Dupont Circle em 1921, cinco anos antes de Nova Iorque ter algo comparável, e a escala intimista e doméstica nunca se perdeu. Cerca de 6.000 obras estão expostas em salas que continuam a parecer uma casa — El Greco ao lado de Cézanne, Bonnard junto a Rothko, dispostos para suscitar diálogos através dos séculos em vez de impor uma ordem estritamente cronológica. A grande atração é Luncheon of the Boating Party de Renoir, mas são a Rothko Room e a câmara de cera de abelha de Wolfgang Laib que ecoam na memória dos visitantes.
