Inaugurado em 2005 no Cyrus and Myrtle Katzen Arts Center, junto ao Ward Circle, o American University Museum é o maior espaço universitário de exposições de arte da região, com mais de 4.000 metros quadrados distribuídos por três pisos. O museu acolhe cerca de 24 exposições por ano, organizadas em temporadas, com uma forte aposta na arte contemporânea de Washington e de cariz internacional. O seu acervo permanente inclui a Watkins Memorial Collection, com mais de 6.000 peças, a Rothfeld Collection of Contemporary Israeli Art e a Corcoran Legacy Collection — um espólio de mais de 9.000 obras transferido da Corcoran Gallery of Art em 2018, que vai de Ticiano e Dürer a Ansel Adams, Andy Warhol e a Washington Color School.
