Conhecido como MOMAT, foi o primeiro museu nacional de arte do Japão. Inaugurado em 1952, mudou-se em 1969 para o atual edifício, projetado por Yoshiro Taniguchi, no Kitanomaru Park. A sua coleção, com mais de 13 000 obras, abrange pintura, gravura, escultura, fotografia e caligrafia japonesas e internacionais, do período Meiji até ao presente. As obras são apresentadas em exposições rotativas da «MOMAT Collection», juntamente com exposições temporárias. O museu fica junto ao fosso do Palácio Imperial, a poucos minutos a pé da estação Takebashi.
