O Seoul Museum of History acompanha a transformação da cidade: de capital da dinastia Joseon, sob o nome de Hanyang, passando pelo Império Coreano e pelo domínio colonial japonês, até a moderna República da Coreia. As galerias permanentes abrigam cerca de 250 mil objetos, dos quais aproximadamente metade foi doada por cidadãos, além de uma maquete em grande escala da cidade e de recursos multimédia que imaginam o futuro de Seul. O museu fica ao lado de Gyeonghuigung Palace, no centro de Jongno-gu, e recebe regularmente exposições temporárias gratuitas sobre fotografia, história urbana e cultura material de Seul.
