Marking photography's bicentenary, this major group show gathers around 700 works by more than 70 artists from Gustave Le Gray to today, anchored by a Barbara Kruger commission in the Rotunda.

The first picture on the wall is one nobody has seen: Edward Steichen's hands shuffling dominoes, never exhibited before, hung beside Annie Leibovitz's portrait of Richard Avedon's camera. From there the show refuses to go in order.
Curator Matthieu Humery built around 700 works by more than 70 photographers as a fugue, one theme returning in different voices. Gustave Le Gray's 1856 seascapes face Eileen Quinlan's abstracted waves, and August Sander's Weimar portraits hang near Sherrie Levine's series made directly after Sander. Barbara Kruger's commission takes over the Rotunda, with lightboxes in the display cases around it. The Pinault Collection holds more than 8,000 prints, so your phone's "storage almost full" warning is the amateur version.
Sortiraparis says to allow at least two hours, and JDS says two to three. Tickets are €15, or €10 for ages 18 to 26, and the museum stays open until 9pm on Fridays. Penn and Depardon have their own shows in Galleries 2 and 3 of the same building.

Le Gray's 1856 sea views, which Humery calls the "Photoshop of 1856" for their composite sky and sea, face Eileen Quinlan's abstracted waves.
Sander and Levine
August Sander's 1920s Weimar portraits hang near Sherrie Levine's series, shot directly after Sander.
Leibovitz's Lennon and Ono
The portrait taken minutes before John Lennon's death faces her photograph of a pregnant Demi Moore, a pairing of death and birth.
Kruger's Rotunda
An eye laid over skin, REMEMBER ME stamped across it in Kruger's red, fills the Rotunda, with text-and-image lightboxes in the display cases.
