Fundada pela joalheria Cartier em 1984, esta é uma das mais importantes instituições privadas de arte contemporânea da França, com uma coleção de mais de 1.500 obras de mais de 350 artistas. Em outubro de 2025, deixou o célebre pavilhão de vidro de Jean Nouvel no Boulevard Raspail para se instalar numa vasta nova sede em frente ao Louvre, novamente projetada por Nouvel no interior do antigo edifício tombado dos Grands Magasins du Louvre. A sua programação valoriza artistas consagrados e emergentes nas áreas de arte, arquitetura, fotografia, design e ciência, com três claraboias envidraçadas e galerias móveis a iluminar cerca de 8.400 m² de espaço.
