Fundado em 1977 pela curadora Marcia Tucker, o New Museum é dedicado à "nova arte e novas ideias", apoiando artistas vivos antes de serem consagrados pelo mainstream. Sua sede icônica, um empilhado de caixas brancas desalinhadas projetado pelo escritório japonês SANAA, abriu na Bowery em 2007 e foi aclamada como um marco da arquitetura contemporânea. Em março de 2026, o museu reabriu com uma ampliação projetada pela OMA que dobrou seu espaço de exposição, acrescentando uma escadaria escultural no átrio, uma praça pública e uma Sky Room no sétimo andar. Por não possuir um acervo próprio, o museu realiza ambiciosas exposições rotativas e a recorrente New Museum Triennial de artistas emergentes.
