Iniciado em 1802 e nunca concluído de acordo com o projeto original, o Palácio Nacional da Ajuda tornou-se, a partir de 1862, a principal residência da família real portuguesa, sob o reinado de D. Luís I e de D. Maria Pia. Hoje, este palácio-museu preserva os interiores oitocentistas e reúne coleções de mobiliário, ourivesaria, cerâmica, têxteis, pintura e fotografia da casa real. Entre os seus destaques contam-se a Sala do Trono, a Sala de Banquetes, ainda utilizada para jantares de Estado, e a exposição Mesa Real, dedicada às refeições quotidianas na corte. O Museu do Tesouro Real ocupa a ala poente do palácio.
