Powołana dla narodu w 1937 roku ustawą Kongresu i ufundowana przez Andrew W. Mellona, National Gallery of Art składa się z trzech połączonych ze sobą części. Zwieńczony kopułą, neoklasycystyczny West Building (1941) projektu Johna Russella Pope’a prezentuje sztukę europejską i amerykańską od średniowiecza po koniec XIX wieku. Znajduje się tu „Ginevra de' Benci” Leonarda da Vinci – jedyny obraz tego mistrza w całej Ameryce – obok dzieł Rafaela, Vermeera, Rembrandta, Moneta czy van Gogha. Ostro zarysowany, geometryczny East Building (1978) autorstwa I. M. Peia poświęcono sztuce nowoczesnej i współczesnej; w jego atrium wzrok przyciąga monumentalny mobil Caldera, a sale wieżowe oddano twórczości Caldera i Rothki. Po drugiej stronie 7th Street rozciąga się liczący 2,5 hektara Sculpture Garden, gdzie wokół centralnej fontanny wyeksponowano rzeźby m.in. Louise Bourgeois i Roya Lichtensteina. Wstęp do muzeum pozostaje bezpłatny od dnia otwarcia.
