Otwarte w 1974 roku dzięki darowiźnie około 6000 dzieł przekazanych przez przemysłowca Josepha H. Hirshhorna, Hirshhorn jest muzeum sztuki nowoczesnej i współczesnej w ramach Smithsonian Institution. Zaprojektowany przez Gordona Bunshafta budynek to otwarta betonowa bryła cylindryczna o średnicy ponad 70 metrów, uniesiona na czterech potężnych filarach nad dziedzińcem z fontanną, mieszcząca trzy piętra galerii w układzie koncentrycznym. Kolekcja obejmuje dzieła od Rodina, Brancusiego, Matisse’a i Hoppera, przez Pollocka, Rothkę i de Kooninga, aż po twórców współczesnych. Prezentowane są one równolegle z ambitnymi wystawami czasowymi oraz zrealizowanymi na stałe zamówieniami artystycznymi m.in. Marka Bradforda, Barbary Kruger i Laurie Anderson. Przylegający do muzeum Sculpture Garden pozostaje zamknięty od 2023 roku z powodu modernizacji według projektu Hiroshiego Sugimoto; jego ponowne otwarcie zaplanowano na 31 października 2026 roku.
