Francisca Carvalho: Kouroi al cora

In 2018 Francisca Carvalho went to Rajasthan and Gujarat on grants from the Fundação Oriente and the Gulbenkian to learn how Indian cloth gets its patterns: natural dyes, hand-block printing and kalamkari, painting on fabric with natural paints. That research, along with her experiments in glass, is one strand of this solo show.

The rest is a large selection of works on paper. Carvalho, born in Coimbra in 1981, studied philosophy as well as fine art, and she builds her pictures out of borrowed symbols. Her own list of references runs from 1930s comics and American pop art to medieval illuminations, so you move between collages, drawings, patterns, texts, paintings and textiles that pull from all of them at once.

It's on Floor -1, on the regular €15 museum ticket, until 23 May 2027. The opening on 2 December at 7pm is free, after a 6pm talk in the auditorium with Carvalho, Neïl Beloufa and the curators. Beloufa's show opens the same day.
