Założone w 1905 roku przez królową Amelię Museu Nacional dos Coches gromadzi – jak samo podkreśla – najważniejszą na świecie kolekcję karet reprezentacyjnych: ponad 70 zabytkowych pojazdów z okresu czterech stuleci. Do najcenniejszych eksponatów należą karety triumfalne z 1716 roku, należące do portugalskiej ambasady udającej się do papieża Klemensa XI, oraz landau, w którym w 1908 roku zamordowano króla Carlosa I. Od 2015 roku kolekcja prezentowana jest w nowym gmachu autorstwa laureata Nagrody Pritzkera, Paulo Mendesa da Rochy, usytuowanym naprzeciwko dawnej Królewskiej Szkoły Jazdy w Belém.
