Założone w 1936 roku jako Boston Museum of Modern Art, ICA jest jedną z najstarszych instytucji sztuki współczesnej w Stanach Zjednoczonych, która w 2006 roku przeniosła się na nabrzeże Seaport. Pracownia Diller Scofidio + Renfro nadała budynkowi o powierzchni ponad 6000 metrów kwadratowych formę wijącej się wstęgi: bostońska promenada Harborwalk wznosi się ku ogólnodostępnym trybunom Jill Medvedow Grandstand, po czym przechodzi do wnętrza jako podłoga i sufit sali teatralnej, podczas gdy najwyższe piętro galerii wysuwa się wspornikowo ku tafli wody na czterech potężnych kratownicach.
