Założone w 1936 roku jako Boston Museum of Modern Art, ICA jest jedną z najstarszych instytucji sztuki współczesnej w Stanach Zjednoczonych, która w 2006 roku przeniosła się na nabrzeże Seaport. Pracownia Diller Scofidio + Renfro nadała budynkowi o powierzchni ponad 6000 metrów kwadratowych formę wijącej się wstęgi: bostońska promenada Harborwalk wznosi się ku ogólnodostępnym trybunom Jill Medvedow Grandstand, po czym przechodzi do wnętrza jako podłoga i sufit sali teatralnej, podczas gdy najwyższe piętro galerii wysuwa się wspornikowo ku tafli wody na czterech potężnych kratownicach. Pod tym nadwieszeniem schodkowo opada ku zatoce Poss Family Mediatheque. Muzeum nie posiada stałej ekspozycji – sale wypełniają wystawy czasowe oraz nowo zamawiane projekty.
