Inaugurato nel 1910 come primo edificio dello Smithsonian concepito esclusivamente per custodire le collezioni nazionali, questo storico palazzo Beaux-Arts sul National Mall ospita oltre 148 milioni di reperti e manufatti suddivisi in sette dipartimenti di ricerca. Attraversata la rotonda sormontata dalla cupola, dove troneggia l'elefante africano Henry, il percorso conduce al celebre diamante Hope, a un Tyrannosaurus immortalato durante lo scontro con un Triceratops, a una balena franca di oltre 13 metri e a 274 mammiferi tassidermizzati.
