Inaugurato nel 1964 con il nome di Museum of History and Technology in uno degli ultimi edifici progettati dallo studio McKim, Mead & White, questo museo dello Smithsonian conserva oltre 1,7 milioni di oggetti che ripercorrono l'esperienza americana. Il suo fulcro è l'originale Star-Spangled Banner — la bandiera di guarnigione di circa 9 per 10 metri che ispirò Francis Scott Key —, esposta in una sala a clima controllato e a luce soffusa adiacente all'atrio a lucernario alto cinque piani.
