Fondato nel 1863 e ospitato dal 1871 nel palazzo neorinascimentale di Heinrich von Ferstel sullo Stubenring, il MAK è uno dei musei di arti applicate, design e architettura più importanti d'Europa. La sua collezione spazia dai mobili e gioielli della Wiener Werkstätte alle sedie in legno curvato Thonet, fino ai cartoni preparatori di Klimt per il Fregio Stoclet, il gabinetto delle porcellane Du Paquier, l'arte dell'Asia orientale e una delle raccolte di tappeti più prestigiose al mondo.
