Tra il 1989 e il 1991 Friedensreich Hundertwasser ha ristrutturato l'ex fabbrica di mobili in legno curvato Thonet, nel quartiere viennese di Weißgerber, trasformandola con pavimenti ondulati, una facciata a scacchiera e una ricca vegetazione che spunta dall'edificio. I primi due piani ospitano l'unica esposizione permanente al mondo interamente dedicata alle sue opere. I piani superiori sono invece riservati a mostre temporanee di arte contemporanea internazionale incentrate sull'ecologia e sul rapporto tra uomo e natura, in quello che si definisce il primo museo verde d'Austria.
