Inaugurato nel 2001, il Leopold Museum nasce dalla straordinaria collezione raccolta in oltre cinquant'anni da Rudolf ed Elisabeth Leopold, istituita insieme alla Repubblica d'Austria e alla Oesterreichische Nationalbank. Con più di 5.000 opere, il museo è dedicato all'arte austriaca della prima metà del Novecento, dalla Secessione all'Espressionismo. Custodisce la più vasta raccolta al mondo di capolavori di Egon Schiele, con oltre 220 creazioni, affiancata da tele fondamentali di Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka e Richard Gerstl. Il celebre percorso espositivo permanente «Vienna 1900: la nascita del Modernismo» (Vienna 1900: Birth of Modernism) le inserisce in un dialogo ideale con gli arredi, il design e le grandi correnti di pensiero dell'epoca.
