Il più grande museo d'arte dell'Austria fu inaugurato nel 1891 in un sontuoso palazzo sulla Ringstrasse, progettato da Gottfried Semper e Karl von Hasenauer, affacciato su Maria-Theresien-Platz di fronte al suo edificio gemello, il Naturhistorisches Museum.
