Il mumok è il più grande museo d'arte moderna e contemporanea dell'Austria, con una collezione di circa 12.500 opere firmate da 1.600 artisti. Il patrimonio museale si è sviluppato a partire dalle prime acquisizioni del 1959, arricchendosi con la Ludwig Collection, la Hahn Collection e uno straordinario nucleo dedicato all'Azionismo viennese, vantando inoltre punti di forza come la Pop Art, Fluxus e il Nouveau Réalisme. Dal 2001 ha sede in un imponente cubo rivestito in pietra lavica di basalto, progettato dallo studio Ortner & Ortner all'interno del MuseumsQuartier, che ospita circa 4.800 m² di spazi espositivi distribuiti su più livelli.
