Fondé en 1945 puis installé en 1993 sur son site actuel, dans l’enceinte du palais de Gyeongbokgung, le National Folk Museum of Korea retrace la manière dont les Coréens ordinaires ont vécu, travaillé et célébré les événements importants, de la préhistoire au XXe siècle. Sa collection de plus de 98 000 objets se déploie dans trois galeries permanentes consacrées aux coutumes saisonnières et aux grandes étapes de la vie, ainsi que dans des espaces extérieurs présentant des sanctuaires villageois et des habitations traditionnelles. Avec son musée spécialement conçu pour les enfants et son programme soutenu d’expositions temporaires, il compte parmi les musées nationaux les plus accueillants de Séoul pour les familles. L’entrée est gratuite.
