Fondée en 2003 par Henri Cartier-Bresson, son épouse photographe Martine Franck et leur fille Melanie, la fondation préserve les archives des deux photographes, soit plus de 50 000 tirages et 200 000 négatifs. Depuis 2018, elle occupe un atelier de 1913, haut et étroit, rue des Archives dans le Marais, offrant bien plus d'espace pour les expositions et l'étude que son ancien site de Montparnasse. Elle organise environ quatre expositions monographiques par an, consacrées à des photographes, peintres, sculpteurs et illustrateurs, et décerne le prix HCB Award, remis tous les deux ans.
