Fondée par le joaillier Cartier en 1984, c'est l'une des principales institutions privées d'art contemporain en France, avec une collection de plus de 1 500 œuvres réalisées par plus de 350 artistes. En octobre 2025, elle a quitté le célèbre pavillon de verre de Jean Nouvel sur le Boulevard Raspail pour s'installer dans un vaste nouvel écrin face au Louvre, à nouveau conçu par Nouvel au sein de l'ancien bâtiment classé des Grands Magasins du Louvre. Sa programmation met à l'honneur des artistes reconnus et émergents dans les domaines de l'art, de l'architecture, de la photographie, du design et des sciences, avec trois verrières zénithales et des galeries mobiles éclairant environ 8 400 m2 d'espace.
