Commencé en 1802 et jamais achevé selon le plan initial, le Palácio Nacional da Ajuda devient en 1862 la résidence principale de la famille royale portugaise sous le règne du roi Luís I et de la reine Maria Pia. Aujourd’hui transformé en musée-palais, il conserve ses intérieurs du XIXe siècle ainsi que des collections de mobilier, d’orfèvrerie, de céramiques, de textiles, de peintures et de photographies issues de la maison royale. Parmi les temps forts de la visite figurent la salle du Trône, la salle des Banquets, toujours utilisée pour les dîners officiels, et la présentation de la Table royale, consacrée aux repas quotidiens à la cour. Le Museu do Tesouro Real (musée du Trésor royal) occupe l’aile ouest du palais.
