Fondé en 1905 par la reine Amélia, le Museu Nacional dos Coches abrite ce qu’il considère comme la plus importante collection de carrosses d’apparat au monde : plus de 70 véhicules historiques couvrant quatre siècles. Parmi les pièces majeures figurent les carrosses triomphaux de 1716, utilisés par l’ambassade portugaise auprès du pape Clément XI, ainsi que le landau dans lequel le roi Carlos I a été assassiné en 1908. Depuis 2015, la collection est présentée dans un nouveau bâtiment conçu par Paulo Mendes da Rocha, lauréat du prix Pritzker, face à l’ancienne École royale d’équitation, à Belém.
