Elgiz Museum of Contemporary ArtMaslak
New and long-held works from the Elgiz Collection side by side, from Rebecca Horn and Gilbert & George to Cevdet Erek, in sculpture, painting, video and textile.
Most of what is on the walls and plinths here is dark on purpose: bronze, wood, ink and silver prints, picked from the Elgiz Collection around shadow and shared memory. Then Stephen Dean's coloured-glass installation breaks it up with colour.
The show puts pieces the collection bought years ago next to new arrivals, 24 artists across sculpture, painting, photography, textiles, digital prints and installation. You move from Selma Gürbüz's ink works and sculptures by Alimi Adewale and Candeğer Furtun to Wang Xiaosuang's city images and Zeki Demirkubuz's street scenes, with work by Rebecca Horn, Mimmo Paladino, Gilbert & George and Cevdet Erek along the way. Tim White-Sobieski's video, bought in 2005, was one of the collection's first video works.
The museum frames it as a meeting of eras rather than a survey of one movement, and no critic has reviewed it yet. Entry is free. It is in the Beybi Giz Plaza in Maslak, open Tuesday to Friday 10:00 to 17:00 and Saturday 10:00 to 16:00, until 28 November.
Rebecca Horn and Gilbert and George next to Cevdet Erek: the Elgiz Collection puts long-held works beside new acquisitions, in sculpture, painting, video and textile. Entry is free, a short walk from İTÜ-Ayazağa on the M2.
Stephen Dean's coloured-glass installation
Look for the one burst of coloured glass in a selection otherwise dominated by dark bronze, wood and ink.
