Inaugurado en 1964 como el Museum of History and Technology, en uno de los últimos edificios proyectados por McKim, Mead & White, este museo del Smithsonian custodia más de 1,7 millones de objetos que recorren la experiencia estadounidense. Su pieza central es la Star-Spangled Banner original —la bandera de guarnición de 9 por 10 metros que inspiró a Francis Scott Key—, exhibida en una sala climatizada y en penumbra junto al atrio de cinco plantas iluminado por tragaluces. El recorrido incluye también los vestidos de investidura de las primeras damas, la barra de cafetería de Greensboro, la locomotora John Bull de 1831 y grandes iconos de la cultura popular en Entertainment Nation.
