Ubicado en el monumental Pension Building de ladrillo rojo de 1887 —obra del intendente general Montgomery C. Meigs en un estilo neorrenacentista inspirado en los palacios romanos—, el National Building Museum es el referente estadounidense dedicado a la arquitectura, el diseño, la ingeniería, la construcción y el urbanismo. Su imponente Great Hall mide 96 por 35 metros y se articula en torno a ocho colosales columnas corintias de 23 metros de altura y casi 2,5 metros de diámetro, construidas cada una con unos 70.000 ladrillos y pintadas a imitación del mármol de Siena. Declarado Monumento Histórico Nacional en 1985, el museo se fundó en 1980 por ley del Congreso como una entidad privada sin fines de lucro. Junto a muestras permanentes sobre vivienda, arquitectura con LEGO y literatura infantil, acoge exposiciones temporales y una célebre instalación estival en el Great Hall.
