Fundada en 1992 por Adolf Krischanitz en una emblemática estructura efímera y amarilla en Karlsplatz, Kunsthalle Wien es el espacio expositivo municipal de arte contemporáneo de la ciudad de Viena. Al carecer de colección propia, centra su actividad en exposiciones temporales de artistas tanto internacionales como vieneses. Desde 2001, su sede principal se encuentra en el MuseumsQuartier —en el antiguo picadero imperial de invierno ampliado por el estudio Ortner & Ortner—, complementada por un segundo pabellón de cristal en Karlsplatz.
