Fundado en 1905 por la reina Amélia, el Museu Nacional dos Coches alberga lo que considera la colección de carruajes de Estado más importante del mundo: más de 70 vehículos históricos de cuatro siglos. Entre sus piezas destacadas se encuentran los carruajes triunfales de 1716 de la embajada portuguesa ante el papa Clemente XI y el landó en el que fue asesinado el rey Carlos I en 1908. Desde 2015, la colección se exhibe en un nuevo edificio diseñado por Paulo Mendes da Rocha, ganador del Premio Pritzker, frente a la antigua Escuela Real de Equitación de Belém.
