Fundado en 1936 como Boston Museum of Modern Art, el ICA es una de las instituciones de arte contemporáneo más antiguas de Estados Unidos y se trasladó al paseo marítimo de Seaport en 2006. El estudio Diller Scofidio + Renfro concibió este edificio de más de 6000 metros cuadrados a modo de una cinta continua: el Harborwalk de Boston asciende por la grada pública Jill Medvedow Grandstand y se adentra en el interior para formar el suelo y el techo del teatro, mientras que la «caja de galerías» de la planta superior se extiende en voladizo hacia la orilla sobre cuatro imponentes celosías. Suspendida bajo este saliente, la Poss Family Mediatheque desciende de forma escalonada hacia el puerto. El museo carece de una colección permanente a la vista: sus salas se renuevan continuamente con exposiciones temporales y obras por encargo. El ICA gestiona además el Watershed, un anexo gratuito de temporada ubicado en un antiguo astillero de East Boston, accesible en ferry desde el propio museo.
