Construido entre 1843 y 1855 por Friedrich August Stüler, el Neues Museum quedó en ruinas tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial y reabrió sus puertas en 2009 tras una magistral restauración a cargo de David Chipperfield, que dejó a la vista las cicatrices de su historia. Alberga el Egyptian Museum and Papyrus Collection —con el célebre busto de la reina Nefertiti— y el Museum of Prehistory and Early History, con piezas tan destacadas como el Sombrero de oro de Berlín y las antigüedades troyanas halladas por Schliemann. El edificio forma parte del conjunto de la Museum Island, declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO.
