In Their Honor: 25 Years of 9/11-Inspired Service

A phoenix with a 15-foot wingspan hangs from the ceiling. Staff at America's Camp made it out of papier-mâché in 2006 with children who had lost family on 9/11, and each child put their own artwork on the feathers. The museum's CEO calls it the show's signature artifact: those children have grown up, and the exhibition is about what they decided to do.

You look up at the wings, then turn to the screens, where a 3D model lets you pick out each artist and read where their service took them. Around it are objects from people who answered 9/11 with work: the jacket Captain Beverley Bass wore when she diverted her American Airlines flight to Gander, the bunker coat presented to Jon Stewart during his 2019 testimony to Congress, and the FDNY helmet of a son who followed his father into the department.

It's included with museum admission ($36 for adults, free on Mondays from 5:30 to 7pm) and runs through January 2030.
