Als erstes Smithsonian-Gebäude, das 1910 eigens für die nationalen Sammlungen errichtet wurde, beherbergt dieses Beaux-Arts-Baudenkmal an der National Mall über 148 Millionen Präparate und Artefakte in sieben Forschungsabteilungen. In der überkuppelten Rotunde passieren Besucher zunächst den afrikanischen Steppenelefanten Henry, bevor es weitergeht zum Hope-Diamanten, einem im Kampf mit einem Triceratops erstarrten Tyrannosaurus, einem 14 Meter langen Nordkaper-Wal und 274 Tierpräparaten. Hinter den Schauhallen erforschen mehrere hundert Wissenschaftler alles von Meteoriten bis zu den Ursprüngen des Menschen. Der Eintritt ist frei, ein Ticket wird nicht benötigt.
