Das 1974 auf Grundlage einer Schenkung von rund 6.000 Werken des Industriellen Joseph H. Hirshhorn eröffnete Hirshhorn ist das Museum der Smithsonian für moderne und zeitgenössische Kunst. Der Bau von Gordon Bunshaft präsentiert sich als offener Betonzylinder mit einem Durchmesser von gut 70 Metern, der auf vier massiven Pfeilern über einem Brunnenhof ruht; drei Galerieetagen legen sich darin in konzentrischen Ringen um das Zentrum. Die Sammlung spannt den Bogen von Rodin, Brancusi, Matisse und Hopper über Pollock, Rothko und de Kooning bis hin zu Gegenwartskünstlerinnen und -künstlern. Präsentiert wird sie im Wechselspiel mit anspruchsvollen Sonderausstellungen und ortsspezifischen Auftragsarbeiten von Mark Bradford, Barbara Kruger und Laurie Anderson. Der angrenzende Sculpture Garden ist seit 2023 wegen einer von Hiroshi Sugimoto konzipierten Neugestaltung geschlossen und soll am 31. Oktober 2026 wiedereröffnen.
